Special Education

William Byrd Middle School offers eligible students a variety of special education services that are governed by local, state, and federal regulations. Procedural safeguards require confidential treatment of all information related to special education services.

An Individual Education Program (IEP) for each eligible student is developed by an IEP Committee that meets at least once a year. Members of the committee must include the parent, teachers, and an administrator. The student is encouraged to participate, and others with an interest in the child may participate at the discretion of the parent or the school. Teachers who have special education students in their classes are expected to read their IEP’s and be familiar with the contents.

The Child Study Committee meets on a regular basis to consider items related to special education services. Members of the committee include the parents, teachers, administrator, school psychologist, guidance counselor, and related service personnel.

Should you have questions or concerns related to special services, please contact your child’s case manager or the Coordinator for our building, Judith S. Curtis.
