Egg Drop -Students design and build a container that holds an egg and is dropped from the top of the stadium - It is supposed to prevent the egg from breaking when hitting the ground. The students are limited in the materials used, and are encouraged to actually build the container rather than just "fill a box with padding".
Paper shoes - Students are challenged to build a pair of shoes out of nothing but paper and tape. They must be able to wear and walk in them for a distance of 20 feet without crushing or falling apart. Decoration is a must, the style of the shoes is up to the students, and the sole must maintain a minumun thickness of 1/2" thoughout the testing. Below are successful examples:
