From the Principal's Desk

Welcome to Oak Grove Elementary.  Oak Grove is a surburban elementary school located in Southwest Roanoke County in Virginia.

We have approximately 550 students in grade K-5. In 2004, we finished undergoing a six million dollar renovation project.  We  added eight additional classrooms, a new media center, a new computer lab and all of our existing classrooms and cafeteria was renovated.  All of our classrooms have Activboards which help to make learning fun and interactive.   All rooms have internet access and at least one or more Dell computers.  We are also fortunate to have two computer labs with 25 Dell Computers and rolling laptop carts for each grade level containing 15 laptops for classroom instruction.

Oak Grove is a wonderful place to work and learn.  You might say I am a little prejudiced since I taught at Oak Grove from 1981-1993 and my three children attended Oak Grove as well.  We have a dedicated PTA which has an annual budget of around $35,000 which is used to enhance our school and provide additional instructional materials for our teachers and students.   Our PTA membership has averaged over 100 percent throughout the years.  Our parent support is outstanding as evidenced by the large number of volunteers who are at our school and events almost on a daily basis.  We are able to meet a wide variety of students’ needs through small group instruction and specialized programs.  Our students love to participate in the Accelerated Reader Program throughout the year.  Our Character Counts Program is strongly emphasized and we promote many activities such as receiving Good Character Coupons and having lunch with the principal at a nearby restaurant.

Our students participate in Destination Imagination with several teams reaching the state level.  Several years ago, one of our teams competed at the World Level.

Our students are performing at or above national, state, or local levels on all standardized and state tests, and we have met the "Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)" goals under "The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB)." Please fell free to stop by and visit or call the school at 540-772-7580 if you have any questions.
