Approved South County Redistricting (elementary and secondary)
As the School Board is aware, we have several elementary schools being renovated at this time. The renovations will not only improve the quality of the schools but will also increase the number of students that can be served in the facilities. We currently have two south county elementary schools that have enrollments exceeding their design capacity, Penn Forest and Oak Grove Elementary schools. Also, Hidden Valley High School (HVHS) and Cave Spring Middle School (CSMS) are crowded, with some students having to share or go without lockers.
With the completion of the elementary schools renovations, we see an opportune time to adjust the elemenetary schools attendance areas to allow us to better use the additional instructional space resulting from the renovations. The architectural and engineering work for a major renovation at Cave Spring Middle School is also in progress. Additional space at CSMS will allow us to adjust the secondary attendance areas to reduce the crowded conditions at HVHS and better balance enrollment between the two schools.
On May 13, 2010 the Roanoke County School Board approved the proposed redistricting plan. Below are links to maps showing the areas to be redistricted. Each area (red) is numbered and the streets included within the area is shown in an attachment. Also below is summary of the estimated resulting enrollments of the affected schools and a list of streets affected by this redistricting plan.
