School Board approves southwest Roanoke County redistricting proposal
The Roanoke County School Board has approved a plan to redistrict school attendance zones for areas of southwest Roanoke County. This redistricting will affect some students currently attending the following schools:
- Cave Spring Elementary
- Clearbrook Elementary
- Green Valley Elementary
- Oak Grove Elementary
- Penn Forest Elementary
- Cave Spring Middle School
- Hidden Valley Middle School
- Cave Spring High School
- Hidden Valley High School
This redistricting plan will take effect for elementary schools beginning with the 2011-2012 school year, and for secondary schools beginning with the 2012-2013 school year. Click here for a complete list of affected streets and maps showing the new elementary and secondary attendance zones.
Currently, the enrollments at two elementary schools (Oak Grove and Penn Forest) exceed each school’s design capacity. Further, Cave Spring Middle School and Hidden Valley High School are overcrowded with some students having to share or go without lockers. The redistricting plan will bring the southwest Roanoke County schools into better balance with each other and to help schools provide instruction more effectively.
“With the completion of renovations and expansions to Cave Spring and Green Valley elementary schools, we see an opportune time to adjust the elementary school attendance areas to allow us to better use the additional instructional space resulting from the renovations,” said Deputy Superintendent Allen Journell.
The architectural and engineering work for a major renovation at Cave Spring Middle School also is in progress. “Additional space at Cave Spring Middle will allow us to adjust the secondary attendance areas to reduce the crowded conditions at Hidden Valley High and better balance the enrollments between Cave Spring and Hidden Valley high schools,” Journell added.
