2010 Hermes Gold Award Winner

Northside H.S. wins Clean Valley Council Award

The Clean Valley Council has presented Northside High School with the Clean Valley Council Government Award for the recent renovation of the school.  As part of the renovation project, project managers implemented several green initiatives to help reduce the environmental impact of the project.

To help reduce the use of fossil fuels for heating and cooling, the school uses geothermal technology.  The school uses nearly 90% less natural gas than before the renovation project.  In addition the renovation project included landscaping to create natural habitats and open space to reduce the “heat island” effect and to provide a buffer to adjoining neighbors.

The project included updated stormwater management and water service, helping to prevent local ground water degradation and reduce runoff from the site.

“We’re quite proud of the Northside High School renovation project and we’re grateful the Clean Valley Council recognized this project with the CVC Government Award,” said Roanoke County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Lorraine Lange.
