Message to Roanoke County Parents concerning the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy

Dear Roanoke County Parents,

We were saddened when we heard about a shooting incident Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. Sadly, many of those who lost their lives were young children.  All of us at Roanoke County Public Schools send our thoughts and prayers to the families of the victims and to the Newtown, CT community.

As our students return to school on Monday, I wanted to assure parents that we continue to take every measure we can to make our schools as safe as they can be.  We work closely with the Roanoke County Police Department to make sure our schools are safe environments for learning.  During the last few hours, we have asked every school principal to review current safety procedures and to determine any additional security needs they may have so they can be implemented.

We know that children may raise questions and concerns about this tragedy.  If children ask questions, talking to them about their worries and concerns is the first step to help them feel safe and begin to cope with the events occurring around them. What you talk about and how you say it does depend on their age, but all children need to be able to know you are there and listening to them.

If you have any questions or concerns, you are always welcome to contact your school principal, school counselor or any central office administrator, or me.  We are here to assist parents in talking with their children or answering questions.

Again, the safety and security of our schools is our top priority.  We want our students to learn in a safe and secure environment and we will take every action or precaution we can to ensure that our students are safe. Thank you for all you do to make Roanoke County Public Schools the best they can be.
