Roof over a portion of Fort Lewis Elementary collapses
A portion of the roof at Fort Lewis Elementary collapsed overnight Tuesday, due to the heavy amount of snow. The portion that collapsed was over the cafeteria. No one was in the building at the time of the collapse.
School leaders currently are assessing the situation and are developing contingency plans for when classes resume January 4, 2010.
“At this time, we’re not sure if the building will be ready for students when school resumes,” said Roanoke County Public Schools Superintendent Lorraine Lange. “We are working on some alternatives so that our students will be able to continue their education,” Lange said.
An announcement about arrangements for Fort Lewis Elementary students and staff will be made before school resumes in January.
