CSHS teacher receives $10,000 grant for outdoor classroom
Stephen Biscotte, a science teacher at Cave Spring High School recently received grant funding to build a green-themed outdoor classroom at the school. The classroom area features a compost bin, planter boxes for native plants, a pergola, a wireless weather station, tables and umbrellas, a solar-panel powered laptop charging station, and space for native trees, shrubs, and an organic garden. Through a partnership with Virginia Tech, the school also offers a program where students grow certain genetically-modified plants to test and learn about different stimuli.
The Vernier grant will be instrumental in bringing together these progressive programs and providing the tools and equipment needed for technology-supported data collection. The new equipment will be utilized by numerous students and classes, from ecology to biology to statistics, at the school.
Biscotte, the 2011 Golden Apple Award winner, began working with students to build the outdoor classroom project in the spring.
