At Hidden Valley Middle School, the resource officer’s
top priority is to promote
a safe environment for students, faculty and
staff. In addition to enforcing criminal and traffic laws and county
ordinances, the resource officer seeks out proactive measures to minimize
the occurrence of crimes in and out of the school.
Classroom instruction allows the resource officer to cultivate
positive relationships with students through the sharing
of knowledge on topics such as conflict resolution, attributes
of a productive citizen, accountability for one’s
actions, and the dangers associated with drugs, alcohol,
and tobacco.
Patrolling the halls and the exterior of the school during the day helps
to discourage inappropriate behaviors from students and outsiders. The
officer is an informational resource for students, parents, and teachers
with questions regarding the criminal justice system. In addition
to maintaining a strong working relationship with school counselors,
teachers, and the school
administration, the resource officer has the ability to assist individuals
and/or families with contacting agencies outside of the school whose expertise
is much needed in certain situations. The resource officer program
in the Roanoke County Schools helps to bridge the gap between the community
and law enforcement personnel.
