HVM RESOURCE OFFICER RECOGNIZED Officer Todd Cunningham with the Roanoke County Police Department is the recipient of the 2011 YOVASO “Volunteer of the Year” Award for his volunteer work with YOVASO and his outstanding efforts to promote traffic safety among youth.Officer Cunningham is the School Resource Officer at HVM.

DESTINATION IMAGINATION TEAM PLACES FIRST IN STATE! Congratulations to our two DI teams. Both placed in the state competition and the first place team will advance to Global Competition in May. The first place team is AJ V, Matthew H, Adam W, Elizabeth W, Morgan D, Hollins V, and Faith S. Our other DI team placed third in Virginia:David K, Lily F, Aadithya S, Kettie J, and Phillip K. Way to go!
LATIN STUDENTS EXCEL Two of our Latin students have earned awards for meritorious performance on the National Latin Exam. Marta K. and Drew L. both scored a Silver, Maxima Cum Laude award, earning a silver medal and a certificate for their scholarship. Congratulations!
STAFF MEMBERS RECOGNIZED FOR EXCELLENCE Mrs. Teresa Worth has been named Southwest Virginia Art Educator of the Year. Mrs. Lisa Childress, Guidance Coordinator, has been awarded the Golden Halo Award in the educator category by the Roanoke Valley Children's Trust, an organization that works to prevent child abuse. Congratulations!
HVM STUDENTS RAISE OVER $4000 FOR ST JUDES CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL Our math students have been busy raising money for the annual St. Judes Math-a-thon. HVM students raised $4,455 for this worthy charity! Way to go! Thanks to our math teachers for taking the lead with this.

HVM GEOGRAPHY BEE The preliminary round was held on January 3 with 48 participants and ten students scoring 80% or higher were named finalists: Rohan C.,Ryan C., Keshav M., Ben P., Moragn D., Sreepoopa S., Jose B., Ben C., Christian E., and Howard H. In the final round, Keshav. M. was our school champion. Sreeroopa S. was first runner up and Morgan Day was second runner up. We are proud of all those who have participated!
MATH CHASE STUDENTS TAKE TOP HONORS Eleven HVM students participated last week in the regional Math Chase competition at the Roanoke Valley Governors School.HVM students won first place in all three grade levels for the written competition: Keshav M (6th grade), Sreeroopa S. (7th grade), and Howard H. (8th grade). Sreeroopa also won first place in the overall Math Chase. Congratulations!

Three teams competed in this year’s Destination Imagination regional tournament on Mar. 13th at Glenvar Middle. DI is an international, creative problem-solving competition open to all students, K-12. There were a total of 73 entries from 49 students. There were so many great entries that the judges had a hard time with their decisions! All first place entries were forwarded on to the County level
of judging where Jillian P and Christine S also won 1st place in their age divisions and categories! Their entries will go on to the State level. Look for further updates in April.

JOHNS HOPKINS CENTER FOR TALENTED YOUTH Sachith G. has earned "Top in Country" awards among 8th graders in the U.S. in the areas of SAT Critical Reading, SAT Combined (#1 of 17,567 students tested nationwide!) and ACT Reading.
BEST MANNERED TEACHER Mrs. Donna Cook has been recognized as "best mannered teacher" by the National League of Junior Cotilions, Roanoke Valley Chapter. Mrs. Cook was nominated by Keli, one of her students because she exemplifies the etiquette taught by the Cotilion program. Congratulations to Mrs. Cook!

HVM STUDENT WINS COUNTY SPELLING BEE: Sullenness. That’s the word that 8th grade Hidden Valley Middle School student Sachith G. spelled correctly in the eighth round to win his fourth straight Roanoke County Spelling Bee, held February 11 at Glenvar Middle School. Sachith will compete in the Roanoke regional spelling bee, sponsored by The Roanoke Times, to be held March 14. Sachith is a 4-time Roanoke County winner. Congratulations!

HVM TEACHERS AWARDED MINI-GRANTS Congratulations to several of our teachers for being awarded mini-grants from the Roanoke County Education Foundation. The following teachers will receive $250 for each classroom project: Ms.Holly Wilson: Dramatic presentations; Mr. Brad Hughes: One man's trash is another man's … compost; Ms. Teresa Worth: French artists sail to HVMS and The future as we see it; Ms. Lisa Weneta: Civil War interdisciplinary unit and Writing and illustrating books; Ms. Marilee Weikel: Decoding heredity. We appreciate the initiative these teachers have taken in securing these grants and we appreciate the ongoing support of the Education Foundation.
HVM ENGLISH TEACHER IS INTERNATIONAL PLAYWRIGHT! Our own Mr. Alex Lucas is modeling good writing and helping students see real-world possibilities by writing, publishing, producing, and performing live theater. The vehicle for his latest work is a children's musical called "Bull: A Puppet Musical." The play made its American debut in November at the Roanoke Fine Arts Festival.
