  • Middle School Promotion Policy: As stated in the Roanoke County Registration Guide: “Students must pass all four (4) of the core subjects (mathematics, social studies, science and English) to be promoted to the next grade level or attend a summer program in the areas of need (a student can enroll in no more than two areas of study). Competency shall be demonstrated in areas of summer instruction.”
  • 2014 Summer School Information: Grade Levels: 6-12; Location: William Byrd Middle School; Session 1: June 16-July 7 (M-Th); Session 2: July 8-July 29 (M-Th) (Enrollment determines which courses are during which sessions) School Day: 8:00-2:05 PM; Transportation: Roanoke County does not provide bus transportation; Funding: Student Tuition; Registration: May 19-June 9 at 4PM at GMS

  • Removal of Credit-Bearing Course(s) from Scholastic Record (Middle School Students): As stated in the Roanoke County Registration Guide, “The parent/guardian of any student enrolled in a middle school, taking a credit-bearing course, may request that the credit-bearing course be removed from their child’s record prior to the beginning of the 9th grade year.” This request must be made on a standard form that can be obtained from the GMS School Counseling office.

POLICY CHANGES: The School Board approved changes to two policies:

Policy 8.01.04 “Possession or Control of Portable Communication Devices on School Property” was updated to prohibit the use of cell phones in locker-room and restroom areas. This change was made due to the possible use of camera features of many cell phones and the invasion of privacy in those areas.

Policy 3.29 “Use of Tobacco” was updated as a result of recent legislation by our General Assembly that “requires every School Board to develop and implement a policy to prohibit the use of electronic cigarettes on school bus, school property , or at school-sponsored activities.”

Please see the Announcements page for the latest events, reminders, and sports updates.

Security in schools has become a very important topic over the past several years as we have witnessed tragedies at Columbine, Virginia Tech and most recently in Newtown, CT.  Roanoke County Schools has taken steps to ensure that your children are safe every day that they attend school.  A new safety measure is being employed this year at all schools that will require all visitors to our schools – including parents, grandparents, etc. – to register in the office, or at other designated areas, before entering the main school building.  You are encouraged to allot a little bit of extra time when picking up your child.  At Glenvar High School and Glenvar Middle School parents must report to the main office first.  Please have your driver’s license ready when signing in.  We know that this is an inconvenience, however, as parents, we must recognize that a few extra minutes spent on the process could potentially protect the students and staff at Glenvar.

It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3…

Should you have any questions about this new process, please do not hesitate to contact Joe Hafey (principal / GHS) or Jamie Soltis (principal / GMS).
