LEAVE NO DOUBT!!
On Thursday, October 9th, our antique boilers - which were once coal fed - were removed from the mechanical room at GHS. Until our new temporary heating boiler is installed it may be a bit chilly inside of the main school building. Students are reminded to bring a sweatshirt or light jacket in the event that you get chilled. This is a very temporary situation and only in the main building. UPDATE: Permanent boilers will be up and running on Monday (11/3). Students and teachers should dress warmly as the main building will be quite cool tomorrow and Monday morning. They should bring a hoodie / jacket in case they get cold. Oh, by the way, there is snow possibly in the forecast for Saturday! Holy Cow!
My name is Kara Reid and I am the new school nurse here at Glenvar Middle and High Schools. I am here to help your child through the wonderful, and sometimes challenging, middle and high school years. My goal is to connect with, and help each and every one of your children with any problem that may arise concerning their health. My hopes are that your child will think of our clinic as a warm and friendly place that they can come to when they are feeling under the weather, or they need help, a safe haven. I was employed by Carilion Clinic for 3 years prior to coming to Glenvar. Glenvar is a great school, but that doesn’t mean that our children won’t face challenges while they are here. As a mother, as well as your child’s school nurse, it is important to me that they know that they have an ally, and that there is always an adult here at the school that will take care of them when needed.
Please feel free to call me anytime with any questions or concerns. I am delighted to have the opportunity to serve you and our Glenvar students. I can be reached by calling either GHS or GMS.
What a great start to the 2014-15 school year! It’s hard to believe that this is my third year as Principal at GMS. As a wise old man once told me things really do happen in the blink of an eye. The students, staff, and community members have made the start of the school year a great experience. As all of you hopefully know the GMS faculty and staff view everyone in our community as family members. We will continue to offer your children a balanced education that stresses not only mastering the information and skills necessary for passing standardized tests but engages them in deeper learning lessons. Deeper learning lessons are quite simply lessons that are engaging and purposeful. We want your students to have the opportunity to explore and master the 4C’s (Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, and Critical Thinking)! These are the skills they will need to be successful in the future!
As everyone probably knows the high school is under renovation and things look a little cluttered up here. Although we will have our challenges throughout the opening and the school year, please have no worries the Glenvar Family is ready. As a lifelong member of the Glenvar Family, I have NO doubts in the abilities of our teachers, students, families, and community members to bond together and tackle any obstacle that may come our way. WE ARE HIGHLANDERS and WE LEAVE NO DOUBT! Please remember my door is always open and if you ever need to talk to me or have a question please stop in the office, e-mail me, or give me a call.
Security in schools has become a very important topic over the past several years as we have witnessed tragedies at Columbine, Virginia Tech and most recently in Newtown, CT. Roanoke County Schools has taken steps to ensure that your children are safe every day that they attend school. A new safety measure is being employed this year at all schools that will require all visitors to our schools – including parents, grandparents, etc. – to register in the office, or at other designated areas, before entering the main school building. You are encouraged to allot a little bit of extra time when picking up your child. At Glenvar High School and Glenvar Middle School parents must report to the main office first. Please have your driver’s license ready when signing in. We know that this is an inconvenience, however, as parents, we must recognize that a few extra minutes spent on the process could potentially protect the students and staff at Glenvar.
It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3…
Should you have any questions about this new process, please do not hesitate to contact Joe Hafey (principal / GHS) or Jamie Soltis (principal / GMS).
