LEAVE NO DOUBT!!
Welcome to the 2014-15 school year! It’s hard to believe that summer break is over. It’s even harder for me to believe I am beginning my 3rd year as Principal at GMS. As a wise old man once told me things really do happen in the blink of an eyeJ. I hope everyone is as excited as I am about the new school year. We plan on having an amazing year here at GMS. As all of you hopefully know the GMS faculty and staff view everyone in our community as family members. We will continue to offer your children a balanced education that stresses not only mastering the information and skills necessary for passing standardized tests but engages them in deeper learning lessons. Deeper learning lessons are quite simply lessons that are engaging and purposeful. We want your students to have the opportunity to explore and master the 4C’s (Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, and Critical Thinking)! These are the skills they will need to be successful in the future!
As everyone probably knows the high school is under renovation and things look a little cluttered up here. Although we will have our challenges throughout the opening and the school year, please have no worries the Glenvar Family is ready. As a lifelong member of the Glenvar Family, I have NO doubts in the abilities of our teachers, students, families, and community members to bond together and tackle any obstacle that may come our way. WE ARE HIGHLANDERS and WE LEAVE NO DOUBT! Please remember my door is always open and if you ever need to talk to me or have a question please stop in the office, e-mail me, or give me a call.
Important notes on Transportation… At this time, we are anticipating that the bus loop behind GMS/GHS will be completed by tomorrow. In the event that it is not complete, buses will drop students at GES and we will have a walkway for bus riding students to get to GHS and GMS. Buses for handicapped students ONLY will drop students at the front door of GMS. Parents who drive their children to school (GMS and GHS) will drop off at GMS. You will NOT be able to drop off at the mobile units or behind GHS at this time.
A message from the Bus Garage: If the students are out, the drivers will pick them up and we can adjust bus stop locations as needed.
Most Importantly: Enjoy the last day of summer! Get to bed early! Be ready to hit the ground running tomorrow!
PS: WBMS has issued the ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE to GMS! WE GLADLY ACCEPT THAT CHLLENGE AND ENCOURAGE ALL STUDENTS AND STAFF TO PARTICIPATE ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 29th at 3PM. The cost to participate will be $2 with all proceeds going to ALS.
Thanks again for all your support,
LEAVE NO DOUBT!!
Attention MS Football Parents: A Message from Coach Swanson,
We had a good turn for the equipment pickup on July 29th. We will have another chance on Thursday, July31st to pick up equipment in case you missed your opportunity this evening. The time will be from 5:30 to 6:30 behind the high school stadium.
Please be aware that because of all the construction going on behind the high school that you will have to park in the middle school parking lot and walk along the side of the middle school, past the old green house and through the middle school field house, then make your way behind the stadium.
All in all, it should only take your son about 10 minutes to get fitted.
As a reminder, all players must have their physical dated after May 1st in order to practice.
We will be having our mandatory parent meeting on Monday, August 4th at 6:30 in the middle school forum.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by either e-mail or cell.
Take care and I look forward to seeing those on Thursday who couldn't make it out this evening.

POLICY CHANGES: The School Board approved changes to two policies:
Policy 8.01.04 “Possession or Control of Portable Communication Devices on School Property” was updated to prohibit the use of cell phones in locker-room and restroom areas. This change was made due to the possible use of camera features of many cell phones and the invasion of privacy in those areas.
Policy 3.29 “Use of Tobacco” was updated as a result of recent legislation by our General Assembly that “requires every School Board to develop and implement a policy to prohibit the use of electronic cigarettes on school bus, school property , or at school-sponsored activities.”
Please see the Announcements page for the latest events, reminders, and sports updates.
Security in schools has become a very important topic over the past several years as we have witnessed tragedies at Columbine, Virginia Tech and most recently in Newtown, CT. Roanoke County Schools has taken steps to ensure that your children are safe every day that they attend school. A new safety measure is being employed this year at all schools that will require all visitors to our schools – including parents, grandparents, etc. – to register in the office, or at other designated areas, before entering the main school building. You are encouraged to allot a little bit of extra time when picking up your child. At Glenvar High School and Glenvar Middle School parents must report to the main office first. Please have your driver’s license ready when signing in. We know that this is an inconvenience, however, as parents, we must recognize that a few extra minutes spent on the process could potentially protect the students and staff at Glenvar.
It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3…
Should you have any questions about this new process, please do not hesitate to contact Joe Hafey (principal / GHS) or Jamie Soltis (principal / GMS).
