You are an Essential Piece to Glenvar Middle School
Can’t imagine us without you!
Congratulations to Katie Deal for being named the middle school teacher of the year by the Virginia Middle School Association!

We encourage good attendance on these dates. Students absent during an SOL will be scheduled to test during make-up days. This may impact their ability to attend field trips.
You can assist your child in preparing for their assessments by ensuring good rest, a healthy meal, and by reviewing with him or her prior to the test.
Thank you and please contact the school at 387-6322 if you have any questions.
Need help to get prepped for the math SOL? Wish that your teacher could explain the math concept to you one more time? This resource is for you! Use your smart phone, iPad or iPod and scan the QR code and instantly watch a 3 to 5 minute video clip to get that extra help.(These videos can also be viewed without the use of a smart phone. Click on the link here.)
Students have watched several of these videos in class, but might not have had the chance to view all of them or would like to view them again as a review.
Also, listed below are SOL tips to help students with concepts that can be confusing. Students will also receive the tips in class and we will review them.
There are practice websites listed on Blackboard as well.
Things to remember….
TAKE YOUR TIME, DON’T RUSH, IT IS NOT A RACE!
1.absolute value: distance from zero-answer is always positive unless the negative sign is outside of the absolute value bars
2. remember shape tree: square, rectangle, rhombus, parallelogram, quad- trapezoid on side (we climb up, not down or side to side):
Square and rhombus: diagonals are perpendicular and bisect
Rectangle and parallelogram: diagonals bisect
3. when multiplying or dividing inequalities that are negative on both sides switch the sign: Mickey Mouse song
4. PEMDAS- order of operations
5. camping rules ( - times - = +; - times + = - ) boy scouts and girl scouts: two negatives equals a positive
6. quadrants on coordinate plane (quadrant I is +,+) then goes CCW (makes the letter “c”): coordinate go x axis and then y axis
7. properties: associative changes groups –Rachel’s Challenge …. Commutative changes order… identity is looking in a mirror…inverse is the opposite… distributive – Halloween candy
8. subtracting integers: add its opposite -4 – 7 -4 + -7= -11
9. square root: number times same number
10. than, to, from are switch words
11. squared- surface area and area; cubed- volume
12. rotation: turn: 90 (1 turn), 180 (2 turns), 270 (3 turns), 360 (4 turns) degrees/ clockwise or counterclockwise – translation: slide the figure – reflection: mirror – dilation: bigger or smaller
13. proportions: have 3 numbers looking for the 4th (is over of – part over whole – all %’s are over 100)
14. we use the radius, not the diameter. Watch carefully!
15. equation means = / expression means no = / inequality means < , > symbols
16. Counting principle – multiply choices together
17. theoretical probability: what you think should happen experimental probability: what does happen
18. clock method: to solve for 1 and 2 step equations and inequalities
19. arithmetic (common difference): adding the same rule
Geometric (common ratio): multiplying the same rule
20. positive exponent: whole number negative exponent: decimal
21. similar: same shape, different size (must check for congruent angles and proportional sides)
***to use your strategies: 50/50, T/F, minus 3, etc.**
You know what you’re doing!
Parents and athletes due to the weather we have had many changes to our athletic schedules. Please see the latest schedules under the athletics tab. I am updating them as games are rescheduled.
Thanks for your patience and understanding!
