Clubs and Organizations

 

There is a wide variety of ways students can get involved at Glenvar besides academics and athletics. GHS offers organizations that promote leadership, academic exploration, social interaction, faith, or civic participation. Just find something that you are interested in. Below is an alphabetical listing of some of the clubs and organizations at Glenvar.


DECA Sponsor:   Martha Hooker mhooker@rcs.k12.va.us


DECA stands for Distributive Education Clubs of America. DECA is a cocurricular club that emphasizes professional development, leadership, social intelligence, and service. Students must be enrolled in a marketing class in order to participate. Students may participate in district, regional, and national competitions to reinforce business and professional competencies.

FBLA Sponsor:  Katie Norris knorris@rcs.k12.va.us


FBLA stands for Future Business Leaders of America. FBLA is a cocurricular organization for all students enrolled in the Business and Technology Program. Activities include community service, school projects, and fundraisers. Members have the opportunity to attend seminars on business and leadership

Fellowship of Christian Athletes Sponsor: Jennifer Rohrback jrohrback@rcs.k12.va.us


The FCA is a voluntary faith based organization open to all students that meets periodically to discuss Christian values and leadership. Events include monthly meetings, meetings in downtown Roanoke before school, and prayer at the flagpole.

The Art Club Sponsor: Ann Blomberg: ablomberg@rcs.k12.va.us

Art club will plan to meet at least once per month after school and will be an opportunity for students to participate in art related activities.  We will plan our activities together depending on the interest of the students.  Meeting dates and times will be determined after our first meeting.

All juniors are invited to get involved with the activities of the Junior Class. The Junior Class has the important jobs of raising money for prom, which is highlighted by the Glenvar tradition of Groovy Teens, and planning the junior senior prom.

The Key Club is an all male organization that promotes social interaction, civic responsibility, and philanthropy opportunities. School spirit and pride are also emphasized.

The Keyettes are an all female organization that promotes social interaction, civic responsibility, and philanthropy opportunities. School spirit and pride are also emphasized. One of the highlights of the Keyettes' year is the annual Homecoming Powder Puff Football Game

The Latin Club is open to all students who are either in Latin classes or interested in Roman culture. Activities include food days, meetings, and other elements of Roman culture.

The National Honor Society is an organization for students who have over a 3.4 GPA and fulfill membership requirements of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Students apply for admission to the National Honor Society and they are elected by a faculty advisory counsel. Members who get in participate in leadership, service, and social activities that better the school or community.

The SCA is comprised of elected students who represent the student body. SCA members participate in social, leadership, and service activities designed to improve school spirit. Homecoming each year is put on by members of the SCA.

The Science Club is open to all students interested in furthering their knowledge and/or interest in all scientific fields. The club currently maintains and monitors the school recycling program. They are also involved in bluebird monitoring and helping to keep the campus grounds clean along with a wide array of other activities.

The Spanish Club is open to all students who are either enrolled in Spanish or interested in different cultures. Activities include food days, meetings, and other elements of World culture.
