Due to its small enrollment, Glenvar is proud to provide outstanding academic opportunities for its students. In 1989, Glenvar was designated by the U.S. Department of Education as one of the outstanding secondary schools in the nation. It is the mission of Glenvar High School to ensure that all students participate in quality learning experiences necessary to grow, adapt, and meet the challenges of a changing world.

Graduation Requirements
The basic instructional program of Roanoke County Schools offers a comprehensive program of studies consisting of over 300 courses. Each students is required to take a minimum of five credit courses per year. Courses within the basic, English, Math, Social Studies, and Science programs can be differentiated into exploratory (regular), college bound, and advanced sections. There they are differentiated, it is indicated on the transcript by an asterisk (*) after the title of each advanced course.Students may receive a standard (22 credit) or an Advanced Studies (24 specified credit) diploma. Students are now required by the Commonwealth of Virginia to receive a certain number of verified credits that are represented by success on the end of course SOL tests taken each May. Graduation Requirements

Students meeting the regular or advanced studies requirements who graduate with a 4.0 (A) grade point average or greater will be awarded the Board of Education Seal on their diploma.
Students graduating with an advanced studies diploma and a 3.0 (B) grade point average along with at least one Advanced Placement or Dual Enrollment course will receive the Governor's Seal on their diploma. The student must have successfully completed at least one AP or Dual Enrollment class.
The Governor's School, a regional center for the study of advanced courses in science, mathematics, and technology, serves 200 students in grades 10-12 in a half day, year long program. Students must apply for admission to the Governor's School and in the midst of stiff competition. Participating school divisions are Roanoke County, Roanoke City, Franklin County, Salem City, Bedford County, Botetourt County, and Montgomery County. All courses are either Advanced Placement or honors courses. The grading scale deviates from the Roanoke County scale as the Governor's School uses a ten point scale.
Grade Point Average (GPA) in Roanoke County is calculated on a four point scale. The exceptions to this rule are Dual Enrollment, Advanced Placement, and college courses, which are calculated on a five point scale. A student's overall GPA is calculated using credits earned from their freshman year continuing through their senior year. According to Roanoke County guidelines, any student with a overall GPA of 4.0 or better is considered a valedictorian of their respective school.Courses taken and failed may be repeated. Final grades for all classes taken for credit will be used in GPA calculation. Students who transfer into Roanoke County will have their grades taken from their previous high schools and calculated into their Roanoke County GPA.Pass/fail courses are not taken into consideration when computing final the final GPA. EMD/TMD students are exempted from the ranking procedure. All other students are included.
