Roanoke Valley Governor's School
Roanoke Valley Governorís School, dedicated to leadership in innovative
instructional practices and effective service to students and teachers, provides
a unique environment in which individuals become increasingly aware of the
relationship between science, mathematics, technology, and society and develop
the skills necessary to contribute to a constantly changing global society.
Roanoke Valley Governorís School for Science and Technology represents a
special alternative opportunity for motivated secondary school students who want
to become part of a thriving and challenging program of studies in math and
curriculum offered at the Governorís School is developed not only to be
rigorous, but specifically oriented towards multiĖ and inter-disciplinary
learning, real-world learning, collaboration, the integration of technology, and
the use of innovative instructional strategies such as problem-based learning,
simulations, research, and design.
Governorís School facility was designed and created specifically for the
curriculum. Laboratories for both
mathematics and the sciences are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment that
enable students to work hands-on in research and experimental design.
opening its door in 1985, the Governorís School has made a lasting impression
on the face of education. The
curriculum is constantly evolving to provide students with innovative,
technologically-rich, cutting-edge academic resources.
Governorís School provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary to
excel in future college and career endeavors.
Roanoke County Public Schoolsí rising 9th through 12th grade students who have or will successfully complete Geometry compete in a highly selective application process in order to earn a place in this part-day program. Although a standard application form is issued by the Governorís School, the Roanoke Valley Governorís School does not participate in the selection process. All applications are evaluated by a Roanoke County run Governorís School Selection Committee. The application period is generally from mid-January through mid-March.
County students who are chosen to go to the Governorís School must provide
their own transportation to and from the Governorís School.
