Roanoke County's Center for Visual Arts at

The Center for Visual Arts (CVA) is one of Roanoke County's Specialty Centers. All rising 9th graders are invited to submit a portfolio and application packet for entrance.

CVA is a 4-year, 8-credit rigorous program that :
• immerses students in creative, intensive, accelerated visual art experiences that integrate studio work, research, critique, aesthetics and career opportunities;
• provides students with specific understanding of the impact of visual arts upon the world, past and present;
• cultivates the development of critical analysis, problem solving, and design skills;
• provides visiting artists as well as many opportunities to visit galleries, museums, artist studios, art lectures, and other visual art events;
• provides mentorship opportunities for students with professional individuals and businesses involved in the arts, as well as interactions with college and art school representatives, providing college and career information, and
•arranges for annual, if not more frequent, exhibit opportunities.

Four-Year Overview


Ninth Grade: Visual Arts I and Cultures

• 0 and 1st periods, 2 credits
• art history component includes cultural studies from prehistoric times through
Renaissance, including some non-western cultures (approximately 1/10 of class time)
• studio component ties in to the art history studied while allowing creative freedom for self-expression. It includes traditional drawing and oil painting techniques, figurative sculpture, pottery including raku, clay sculpture, mosaics, calligraphy, printmaking handmade paper and bookbinding, costume research, design and construction, jewelry making, acrylic painting with symbolism. Every 9 weeks they turn in a creative project using media of their own choice, interpreting a given theme in their own way.
• journal/sketchbook: students write summaries of their textbook readings, as well as thoughts on our projects, field trips, and other creative ideas. They also document research and draw, draw, draw.

Tenth Grade: Visual Arts II and Styles

• 0 and 1st periods, 2 credits
• art history component includes cultural studies from Reformation through Contemporary times including more non-western cultures (approximately 1/10 of class time)
• studio component ties into art history studied while allowing creative freedom for self-expression. It includes new drawing techniques, printmaking, jewelry making, basketmaking or weaving, painting in both oils and acrylics in many styles and genre, mixed media, larger sculpture (some public), performance art, photography, computer graphics and digital video. The 9 weeks creative projects continue.

Eleventh Grade: Visual Arts III and Self Direction

• 0 and 1st periods, 2 credits
• research component reflects areas of their interest
• studio component reflects the areas of their own interest into which, they are expected to go in depth and develop advanced skills with professional guidance.
• more professional opportunities will arise in non-studio areas, such as curating exhibits.
• college representative visits and visits to some colleges will be arranged
• portfolio and journal/sketchbooks continue

Twelve Grade: Visual Arts IV and Careers

• research component reflects their areas of interest
• studio component reflects their areas of interest
• internship opportunities with professionals in their area of interest
• portfolio and journal/ sketchbooks continue
• more college representative visits and college visits, as well as help with portfolio/application preparation for college.


Field Trip opportunities for all years include local galleries, studios and museums, colleges, Washington, DC museums, New York City museums and trips to Europe among others.
