2011-2012

Johnson & Wales University Career Explorations 2012: Johnson & Wales University will be hosting a career exploration program this summer. Holiday Forestry Camp: The Holiday Forestry Camp is a camp for students agest 13 - 16 and is designed to introduce "young Virginians to the challenges, special skills and knowledge needed for managing the forest resources we use and enjoy every day." VCU Physical Therapy Summer Exploration: The Department of Physical Therapy in the School of Allied Health Professions at Virginia Commonwealth University will sponsor a two week summer exploration program (http://www.dhsd.vcu.edu/programs/highschool/physicaltherapy.html) to provide students the opportunity to take an in-depth look at physical therapy as a profession. The program will begin July 9, 2012 and applications must be submitted by April 27, 2012.

PROMYS: Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists is a six-week, intensive residential program sponsored by the Boston University Mathematics Department which offers a "creative mathematical exploration to approximately 65 ambitious high school students with an exceptionally strong interest in mathematics." The program will take place July 1 - August 11, 2011. The cost is $2,700 per student (books may be an additional $100); however, financial assistance is available. NYU Pre-College: NYU Precollege offers rising high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to experience academic and student life at New York University. Students take college level courses for academic credit which may be applied to a future degree. Residential and non-residential options are available. UVA's Leadership on the Lawn: The UVA Leadership on the Lawn (L.O.L.) summer program is a four-day, residential summer program held July 8 - July 13, 2012. The prgoram is open to rising Juniors & Seniors to "strengthen the leadership skills of students who have displayed leadership interest and potential" in their school and community. Topics covered will be self-discovery, team building, ethics, decision-making, diversity, community service, communication, and action-planning. UVA Curry School of Education: University of Virginia Curry School of Education’s Summer Enrichment Program is a program for rising 5th-11th gifted or high ability students. Application deadline is February 15, 2012; http://curry.virginia.edu/sep

VA State Parks Youth Conservation Corps: 2012 Virginia State Parks Youth Conservation Corps is a program that combines work experience, education, & life skills development with the framework of environmental and community service. Which Scientist Are You?: Which Scientist Qre You?  Smith College Summer Science and Engineering Program for girls entering grades 9-12. Program dates are July 1-28. For additional information, please visit www.smith.edu/ssep

Blue Ridge Summer Institute for Yount Artists (BLUR): This program will be held at Sweet Briar College on June 17-July 8, 2012 for students interested in creative writing, theatre, or visual arts. For more information, visit www.sbc.edu/blur.

National Youth Science Camp: This program is for Seniors who demonstrate superior academic proficiency, including recognition in mathematics &/or sciences. AIU High School Diplomats: AIU High School Diplomats brings Japanese and American students together at Princeton University. The program is available to current sophomores and juniors. Phillips Academy Summer at Andover: Summer at Andover program through Phillips Academy. The program is available to students entering grades 9-12. Academy will be held June 26-August 1,2012. VA STEM Program: The Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars (VASTS) program is a FREE interactive on-line science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning experience for high school juniors, culminating in a one-week residential Summer Academy at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton.  VASTS consists of ten online modules from December 2011 through May 2012.  Students who successfully participate in VASTS earn 2 college credits for the online course and 2 additional credits for the Summer Academy.  Deadline for application is November 4, 2011.  www.vasts,spacegrant.org

 

2010 - 2011

College & Careers Program: Rochester Institute of Technology will be hosting the College & Careers program for rising Seniors. The program will be held July 22-23 and August 5-6, 2011. Register online at http://www.admissions.rit.edu/careers

College Orientation Workshop: The College Orientation Workshop (COW) will be offered at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), June 26, 2011, through July 23, 2011. This workshop is a challenging summer educational enrichment program. The goal is to prepare male, minority high school rising juniors and seniors to achieve success during the remainder of their high school careers and beyond. This is done by cultivating confidence, greater self-esteem, a stronger work ethic, and a commitment to achieving success in spite of the many challenges facing them. Rising 11th- and 12th- grade male, minority students interested in the workshop must fill out a five-part, online application. Applications should be accessed and submitted via the COW Web site at http://cow4life.wordpress.com/. The deadline for submitting application materials is Monday, May 16, 2011.

Broadreach's Academic Treks: Broadreach’s Academic Treks offers college-accredited summer adventure programs abroad that focus on marine science, language immersion, environmental studies and/or community service.  Students can earn up to three college credits and up to 55 hours of community service credits, depending on the program.  Grades 9-12. www.academictreks.com or www.gobroadreach,com

Georgetown Summer Program: Georgetown’s Summer Programs for High School Students hosts eight-day intensive learning experiences in various experiences; Sessions are June 5 - Aug 14; http://summer.georgetown.edu

VT Summer Internships in Science: Interested in learning more about cancer and getting experience doing molecular biology research? Two interns will be selected to spend three weeks (tentative dates June 20 – July 8) in Dr. Finkielstein’s lab in the Dept. of Biological Sciences at VT and three weeks (tentative dates July 9-July 30) at the Escuela Tecnica Otto Krause in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  Interns will work side by side with researchers. 2009 - 2010

Commonwealth Leadership Institute: The Commonwealth Leadership Institute will be held at Christopher Newport University from June 27-July 1. The program is for Rising High School Seniors. The registration deadling is April 1. For more information, visit www.cli.cnu.edu

STAR Program: The STAR (The Science Training and Research Program) is a 4-week residential program at the College of Willliam & Mary. The program is a pre-collegiate summer enrichment program for rising 11th grade students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The program covers non-courses in mathematics, biology, chemistry, & SAT preparation. Eligible students must have a cumulative GPA of at least a B, come from a disadvantaged backbround, will be fully completed with the 10th grade by June 2010, and express a willingness to work and a desire to improve their level of scholarsitc achievement in order to attend post-secondary education after high school. This an all-expense paid program for eligible students.The program will take place June 19-July 17, 2010. Summer Engineering at Sweet Briar: Summer Engineering Course at Sweet Briar College will take place July 25-30. Rising Juniors & Seniors are eligible to participate. The registration deadline is June 15. www.engineering.sbc.edu

Miss Teen Virginia International 2010:
Miss Teen Virginia International 2010, an official preliminary to the Miss Teen International Pageant that will be held at the North Shore Performing Arts Center in Chicago, Illinois. The dates are July 19th ~ July 24th, 2010. Miss Teen International 2010 will receive Prizes and college scholarship money.
