2011-2012

National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine is a program for students who are interested in purusing a major/career in the medical field. Students in grades 9-12 who are interested in attending the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine to be held this fall 2011 are to see Mrs. Mitchell before the September 9 nomination deadline.

2010-2011

Camp Treehouse will be held June 10-12, 2011. Camp Treehouse is for students 6-17 who have lost a loved one. The camp is provided by the Service of Carilion Clinic Hospice. Volunteers are also needed. For more information, call 489-6503. HAMILTON CITIZENSHIP ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: 2011 Alexander Hamilton Citizenship Achievement Award is eligible to Junior students who are college bound and have a strong record of community service and academic studies. The student must be committed to enrolling in the Hamilton Leaders Academy in Seattle 2012 and Guatemala in 2013. For more information, visit www.hamiltonfriends.org. BLACK STUDENT LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE: The 4th Annual Black Student Leadership Conference will take place at Virginia Western Community College on Saturday, February 19, 2011.  Award winning speakers and workshop leaders will be on hand to challenge and motivate conference participants in pursuit of maximizing opportunities in their daily lives.  This year’s featured presenter, Dr. DeByii Sababu-Thomas, is a dynamic professor, educator, consultant, and motivational speaker who is known not only for her powerful speaking, but also for her educational, inspirational and interactive presentations and training. The conference will also showcase the creativity and talents of students attending local colleges/universities and high school seniors.  Door prizes are provided by local vendors. The $5.00 registration fee covers the cost of lunch and conference materials. See Mrs. Liechty in the Career Center for details.

UVA SOCIETY OF WOMEN ENGINEERS HIGH SCHOOL VISITATION: UVA will host their annual SWE High School Visitation Weekend on February 26-27, 2011. The weekend is for junior & senior female high school students to spend the weekend exploring majors & careers in engineering. Participants will be housed in dormitories so they can experience college life while learning about the many opportunities that are available in the engineering field. Application deadline is Friday, January 21, 2011. See Mrs. Liechty in the Career Center for an application.

VERY BEST IN YOUTH: Nestle Very Best in Youth and HOBY have entered into a partnership to recognize young people (ages 13-18) who are making a positive difference in lives other than their own.  Applicants must do well in school and do their best to make their communities and the world a better place.  The winners will receive lots of prizes, including $1000 to donate to the charity of their choice and an all-expense paid trip for them and their parents to attend the awards ceremony in Los Angeles in July, 2011. VIRGINIA AEROSPACE SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY: VASTS (Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars) is a NASA-based distance learning program for high school Juniors. For additional information, please visit www.vasts.spacegrant.org. Deadline for applications is November 5, 2010

EXPLORING ENGINEERING AT SWEET BRIAR COLLEGE: Explore Engineering at Sweet Briar College IS a free weekend for high school girls (10th-12th grades). The weekend will be October 22-23. To register, please visit www.engineering.sbc.edu by October 16.

FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT PROGRAM: Are you interested in hosting a foreign exchange student? HVHS students have an opportunity to host a foreign exchange student. The foreign exchange students are "15-18 years old, bring spending money, want to share cultures, speak English, and have full insurance." INSPIRE: INSPIRE Online Learning Community—NASA’s Interdisciplinary National Science Program Incorporating Research Experience is offered to 9th – 12th graders. The program includes an online activity beginning Fall 2010 with Summer 2011 experiences at NASA facilities. Applications being accepted May 3 - June 30.
